Hot Docs-Slaight Family Fund backs five music docs with $121,000 in production funding
Five Canadian music documentaries share $121,000 in production-stage support, bringing the fund's totals to 23 projects and more than $627,500 since 2020.
Hot Docs has announced five music-focused documentary projects as the latest recipients of the Hot Docs-Slaight Family Fund, splitting a total of $121,000 in production-stage support among Canadian filmmakers exploring subjects ranging from a Punjabi hip-hop scene in suburban Ontario to a legendary DJ’s return to the stage after a spinal cord injury.
The fund, established in May 2020 through a partnership between Hot Docs and The Slaight Family Foundation, is described as the first initiative of its kind in Canada dedicated specifically to music documentaries. It supports filmmakers telling stories that highlight Canadian music’s reach on the world stage, while also making room for international music stories filtered through a Canadian filmmaking lens. With this latest round, the fund has now backed 23 projects and distributed more than $627,500 since its launch.
Hot Docs Executive Director Diana Sanchez framed the funding as increasingly vital in a tough financing landscape for documentary work, noting that partners like The Slaight Family Foundation help projects move forward “with confidence while signalling a belief in our own stories.” She pointed to this year’s Hot Docs Opening Night selection, Michelle Mama’s Antidiva: The Carol Pope Confessions, as an example of the fund’s track record — the film was a Slaight Family Fund recipient before becoming a Top Ten Audience Favourite at the 2026 festival.
“Delighted to continue” the partnership, and looking forward to seeing the five new projects through to completion.
This year’s slate was selected by a committee that included María José Arauz of Hot Docs, filmmaker Tiffany Hsiung of Golden Nugget Productions, and Barnaby Marshall of Slaight Music.
